Dr Martin Melchiors studied chemistry at the University of Aachen / Germany and earned his PHD in chemistry (in the field of polymer chemistry). He joined Bayer AG in 1995, holding several positions in research & development as well as technical marketing for coatings and adhesive applications in the following years. Today Dr Melchiors is responsible at Covestro Deutschland AG, formerly Bayer MaterialScience, for application & technology development of adhesives for industrial applications.
Polyurethane dispersion adhesives for industrial use: New properties – new applications
Polyurethane dispersions were introduced as raw materials to the industrial adhesives market in the late 1980s, enabling among others a new technology for 3d lamination of MDF panels with PVC foils in furniture production due to their semicrystalline structure and sharp melting behaviour. Combined with suitable crosslinkers, these water-based adhesives have demonstrated their outstanding performance for many years, and have developed successfully into additional applications such as footwear sole bonding and automotive interior trim lamination.
Recently, new developments providing additional properties to the dispersion polymers, e.g. improved climate resistance, wet bonding characteristics or a backbone consisting of > 50 % carbon originating from renewable sources, open up new applications and market opportunities for waterborne PU adhesives, including bio-based adhesives, foam bonding adhesives and adhesive films, e.g. for electronic applications. A comprehensive overview of these new applications will be provided.
