Dr Otto Soidinsalo holds a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Helsinki. Currently he works as a Technical Application Manager at Borregaard. Before joining Borregaard, Otto worked in various positions in pharma and cellulose derivatives related industries, ranging from R&D to product and application development and technical services.
Cellulose fibrils – novel rheology modifier for dispersion adhesives
There is great interest in the adhesive industry to move towards water-based systems. Performance additives for water-based systems play a crucial role in improving their properties. However, common additives often suffer from poor compatibility with emulsifiers present in the water-based adhesive systems, leading to a loss of viscosity. Cellulose fibrils are a novel type of rheology modifier that are characterised by their ability to form stable three-dimensional networks of cellulose microfibres in adhesives and sealants. The excellent flow and levelling properties of cellulose fibrils enables the use of different application techniques; brush, roll and spray. The viscosity of cellulose fibrils is independent on the temperature, giving the same performance regardless of the surrounding conditions. Cellulose fibrils also demonstrate high efficacy and robustness in harsh environments, performing in a wide range of pH (1-13) and high temperatures.
In the present study, the potential as well as compatibility of cellulose fibrils as a rheology modifier in polyurethane dispersion (PUD) and polychloroprene adhesives was evaluated in terms of rheology as well as by visual perception.
