Mineral oils are very versatile petroleum substances which can be used in many applications, including holtmelt adhesives. To ensure the supply of safe raw materials to customers, the oil industry has agreed on common criteria on how to assess the hazard of substances during the production process and how to demonstrate a safe product for the intended use. Many of these criteria and specifications have later been incorporated into regulations.
In recent years, mineral oils have been in focus as a possible contaminant in food. Here, many misunderstandings have resulted in additional work for many stakeholders throughout the supply chain. This presentation intends to shed light on the different types of mineral oils, specifications and the intended uses, including FCM. This will allow the formulator to choose a safe raw material for the specific application.
