Polyurethane dispersions (PUD) have established their position as a raw material for waterborne adhesives in industrial applications. Due to their semi-crystalline polymer structure with sharp melting behavior they enable heat activation bonding in efficient industrial manufacturing processes with high adhesive performance on a broad variety of substrates.
In this presentation a new type of PUD allowing even better durability especially in hot and humid climate conditions will be presented. This opens the path into new sustainable solutions for demanding bonding applications, e.g. automotive interior trim lamination or 3D lamination for kitchen and bathrooms cabinets.
Although solventborne adhesives are still widely used in the mattress and soft furniture industry, there is a growing demand for waterborne solutions due to changing legal requirements and workplace hygiene considerations. Furthermore, some eco-labels are focusing their attention on organochlorine, pushing the industry to look for alternative solutions.
We will present a new polyurethane dispersion that allows the creation of adhesives with excellent wet bonding properties, which is usually a domain of other types of polymers, such as polychloroprene. For foam-to-foam (e.g. mattresses) and foam-to-wood (e.g. upholstery furniture) adhesives the new PUD provides immediate wet tack, early wet strength and a long open time in common spray coagulation application, combined with good heat-resistance and a non-yellowing bondline.
