Verena Brunner

Senior Marketing Manager

WACKER Chemie AG

Biography

Following high school graduation, Verena Brunner joined Siltronic AG pursuing a trainee programme focusing on business economics with languages. After successfully completing this internship Verena became a member of the overseas export department for engineering silicones at Wacker Chemie AG. During this period she was able to complete her bachelor in international management with special focus on marketing.
In 2016 she moved to the silicone sealant business unit within Wacker to take up a position as international marketing manager. Since the beginning of 2022 she joined the business team for silane modified polymers where she is looking to expand Wacker’s activities, again in an international marketing position.

Presentation Abstract

Silane Modified Polymers: Success Story of a Young Sustainable Technology

In the context of disruptive R&D projects 20 years ago, our scientists were able to develop the first alpha silanes to be used in the end capping of SMPs and a new generation of silane terminated polymers was born: the alpha SMPs.

Next to their exceptional properties, the most compelling value proposition associated with STP-E based adhesives and sealants is their solvent- and isocyanate-free nature accompanied by the strength of polyurethanes with the weathering resistance of silicones. Alpha-SMPs additionally do not ask for tin for catalysis which has built the ground for many new formulation possibilities in the recent years. In 2023, REACH Regulations have put into place a mandatory training for employing products with more than 0.1% of monomeric diisocyanates including polyurethane adhesives and sealants in construction, which raises even more attention towards this health- and user-friendly technology.

The so-called alpha effect provides an extraordinary value in e. g. 1K waterproofing liquid membranes formulated with alpha STP-Es, but has seldomly been used in Low Modulus and High Modulus sealants.

This is why our scientists have developed the next generation of SMPs – a true breakthrough: combining alpha and gamma silanes in one STP-E, we are able to close this gap.
