Biography

Following high school graduation, Verena Brunner joined Siltronic AG pursuing a trainee programme focusing on business economics with languages. After successfully completing this internship Verena became a member of the overseas export department for engineering silicones at Wacker Chemie AG. During this period she was able to complete her bachelor in international management with special focus on marketing.

In 2016 she moved to the silicone sealant business unit within Wacker to take up a position as international marketing manager. Since the beginning of 2022 she joined the business team for silane modified polymers where she is looking to expand Wacker’s activities, again in an international marketing position.

Presentation Abstract

Pave the way for a better future, now! Our journey to an eco-friendlier silicone sealant

Silicone sealants play an important role in prolonging the durability of buildings. Protection against water ingress, good weatherability and insulation to avoid unnecessary energy and heat loss is an inherent consequence in indoor and outdoor applications.

Until now, few environmentally friendly solutions for the packaging and manufacture of such products have been evident in the market – and no holistic solutions in sight. This is now set to change as we look to provide mid-term concepts.

Our journey has only just started: more sustainable packaging has been evaluated and three dimensions identified: using recycled variants of the established PE-cartridge, pushing for alternative packaging solutions with a lower CO2 footprint, and developing new packaging concepts for defined customer groups.

Moreover, looking at the sealant itself, our vertically integrated production cycle allows us to re-assess – from scratch – the selection of material sourcing and its subsequent processing. Therefore, we have taken a first step towards an eco-friendlier silicone sealant: by replacing conventional methanol by certified renewable bio-methanol, resulting in an improved ecological footprint. Furthermore, a mid-term milestone plan has been developed. This encompasses diverse scopes and leverages and we are looking to further contribute to a greener solution yet with no compromise on industry requirements.
