Latest developments on a path to sustainable silicone adhesives and sealants
Silicone is a widely known and proven technology in the world of adhesives and sealants. It provides unique properties compared to traditional organic based materials, thanks to its chemical polymer structure based on silicium and oxygen. Durability and high resistance to most external ageing factors are two remarkable advantages widely leveraged in construction, automotive and consumer appliances markets.
The paper reviews the latest developments on a path to transform silicones into a carbon neutral and circular technology, considering the specific manufacturing processes and value chain stream of silicones that differ from typical petroleum-based technologies.
The latest technology approaches and industrial developments on up-stream fabrication of silicon metal from quartz are reviewed in this paper, as well as the impacts of siloxane processing, and the recent progress made in recycling formulated silicones and how to circle back into the value chain.
The paper also shares the methodology and recent data that more precisely quantify the carbon hand-print of silicones in specific applications considering their inherent durability and lower carbon footprint.
